This week, we are sharing with you an overview of the ancient Taoist practice of feng shui, which promotes harmony and balance in the home. We also offer tips on how color plays an important role in this concept and can add to the peace and tranquility throughout the home.
Feng Shui, based on ancient Taoist teachings, is the practice of arranging objects in an environment to promote hamony, balance and a connection with nature. It achieves this by incorporating the five basic elements: earth, water, fire, wood and metal.
Key Principles:
- Clear unneccessary clutter to open up the flow of traffic.
- Design a welcoming entryway.
- Place fresh greenery with soft, rounded leaves in each room.
- The main furniture, such as a sofa or bed, should be placed so you can see the doorway but not be in its direct line of vision.
- Clean often, especially windows.
Muted, natured-inspired colors equal calm while bright colors equal energy. To inspire balance and openness, floors and carpets should be the darkest colors in the room while walls and the ceiling are lighter colors.
